On Operation

Dear Dad,

Yesterday I got your letter concerning the pullout.  I was just about asking for the address of Charles Mathias.  I know that you know Mr. Clarence Long personally and I believe that he had a son over here at one time.  At any rate, I'd like to write Mr. Long a letter after he passes the “scoop” to you.

Is there any way that I can get in Maryland state flag?  Everyone in my squad has written for their state flag.  Since I'm a resident serving in the armed forces in Vietnam, I would think the state would send me one.  I know for a fact that there are many requests for flags back in the states that have flown over Vietnam – “Old Glory” and state flags.  If the State of Maryland is interested, I will return the flag back to the state when I return.  I doubt if you will have any trouble getting information on this matter.

I understand that many cities throughout the country want to fly “War Veteran flags.”  Anyway I don't want you to buy one unless the state will give it, which they will.

Some good news!  5 men, hand-picked, will enter the civil action program.  The rest of the company will go on operations while these five men will stay in the villages with the people.  The Lt. told me yesterday that I was chosen.  He said that I may not have enough time left in the Nam to go.  But so far I'm in!

Don't work too hard!

Thanks Pop,

Pete
